Crocs are so back! But honestly, did they ever really leave? Crocs have been part of our lives since its foundation in 2002 and the debut of their iconic shaped clog. Crocs is reimagining its business model and adapting to the future by incorporating circular and recycled materials and other circular policies.

Crocs Innovation in Materials

Crocs has engineered a new material made from bio-based and recycled clogs: Croslite. The company aims to reduce the carbon footprint of producing one classic clog by 50% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2040.

Crocs is also making an effort by conducting audits in vulnerable parts of the supply chain, gaining insight into processes the company can’t control due to external stakeholders.

The brand’s signature, Croslite™, is patented by Crocs due to its unique closed-cell resin composition that differs from other plastics or rubbers. Croslite™ now incorporates at least 25% bio-circular content from repurposed bio-based waste. Additionally, Crocs is integrating post-consumer recycled materials into its designs, as seen in the limited-edition Keep It Going Clog.

Through the Old Crocs. New Life Program, Crocs has introduced the limited-edition Keep It Going Clog. The shoe is designed with Croslite™, which contains at least 25% bio-circular content. Bio-circular content refers to materials derived from other industries, such as cooking oil and paper waste.

The redesigned classic clog maintains the brand’s signature comfort and style while promoting a more sustainable approach to footwear. By repurposing bio-based waste from other industries, Crocs is increasing its efforts toward carbon-neutral and circular production.

The Crocs Take Back Program

Crocs are known for their durability, a key characteristic of designing for longevity in a circular economy. However, this durability also means they do not decompose after disposal in landfills. To tackle this issue, Crocs has launched a Take Back Program, currently available in U.S. stores only.

This initiative encourages consumers to send their lightly worn or pre-loved shoes back to Crocs for proper recycling. Participants receive 10% off their next purchase. Furthermore, Crocs donates shoes to vulnerable communities worldwide, having donated approximately 236,500 pairs.

Crocs for the Community

Crocs has created a new foundation for the future based on four critical pillars: inclusivity, circularity, climate stability, community, and responsibility. The company has been supporting developing communities like the Big Brothers Big Sisters Foundation with shoes and mentor or education opportunities. Additionally, Crocs has been sharing its progress reports on its website to educate consumers.
