Madrid-based PYRATEX® isn’t your typical R&D lab. Through science and a deep focus on sustainability, it’s proving that textiles can be grown, not spun from synthetics. And they’re doing it in collaboration with some of the biggest names in fashion. Hint;) Loewe
Founded in 2014 by Regina Polanco, PYRATEX's mission is straightforward yet ambitious. To replace synthetic materials with bio-based, low-impact ones that retain the natural benefits of plants and fibres that they come from.
Their team is based between Mexico City and Madrid. Operating in 7 languages and across continents, to research innovative fibres and develop functional knit fabrics, all ground-breakingly, natural, regenerative, or recycled.
At the core of this process is a simple but powerful model:
Raw Materials: Natural or recycled sources with inherent performance qualities. Those who are often overlooked: discarded orange peels, woody nettle stems, algae-rich seaweed, and post-consumer cotton scraps.
Fibre: Developed using the PYRATEX formula, which turns those overlooked raw materials into high-performance fibres.
Yarn: Spun to exacting counts and quality standards.
Fabric: Dyed, finished, and ready to wear.
Each step is carefully calibrated to preserve the plant’s original properties, with every process fully traceable thanks to certifications like GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX, Bluesign, FSC, and PEFC.
What Can They Do?
Don’t let the word ‘natural’ fool you. PYRATEX fabrics are anything but basic. Engineered for high performance, they cool the skin on hot days with breathable, open-knit structures, block UV rays, and reflect infrared radiation. All without relying on chemical treatments.
Moisture-wicking and quick-drying, they perform like athletic wear, while offering gentle, irritation-free comfort that’s naturally antibacterial, making them ideal even for sensitive skin.
Collaborating With the Best
PYRATEX's collaboration with Loewe mentioned above is only an example. With materials this advanced, it’s no surprise the R&D house has caught the attention of major fashion houses. Some of their client list includes:
Fiorucci, for bold, expressive designs.
PANGAIA, a longtime partner in natural innovation.
Camper, bringing circular design to footwear.
AZ Factory and Phillip Lim, redefining luxury through responsible sourcing.
ASICS, exploring sustainable performance wear.
With its motto 'Advancement through Nature, ' PYRATEX is making a case for the future of fashion. One that’s rooted in biology, shaped by science, and guided by circularity.
