Artificial Intelligence isn't exactly known for its sustainability. From data centres to energy-intensive training models, AI often comes with a massive carbon footprint. But Smartext flips the script by using AI to save more instead of consuming more.

With backing from H&M Group, Amazon, and iPod inventor Tony Fadell, Smartex is trying to bring the future to the factory floor.

The Smartext System

Smartext is a Portuguese tech company building AI-powered tools for optimising textile production. Rather than replacing old machines, Smartext makes them better both in terms of performance and in terms of the planet.

Their solution comes in a three-part system:

1. Smartext Core:

   At the heart of the Smartex system is CORE, an AI-powered fabric inspector that watches production 24/7. It consists of high-resolution cameras and smart light systems that flag even the tiniest defects in real time.

2. Smartext Fact:

   This is a digital dashboard that tracks every roll, machine, and process, providing manufacturers with full visibility into their operations.

3. Smartext Loop:

   This tool creates a digital passport for every roll of fabric, making it possible to trace quality, history, and impact across the supply chain.

Can AI be Sustainable?

Textile production is messy. Every minute, a pile of fabric is burned or dumped. Smartext is tackling that waste at the source by spotting mistakes as they happen and fixing them before it's too late.

Their technology has already saved 1 million kg of fabric, 94 million litres of water, and 4.6 million kg of CO2. These results are what set Smartext apart from the norm of AI. By saving resources, it demonstrates that technology used wisely can drive innovation and sustainability without weighing on the planet's resources.
