studiœncore: Giving Sneakers a Second Life in a Sustainable Fashion Revolution

The Environmental Impact of the Fashion Industry
Encore Studio

The fashion industry is one of the world's biggest polluters, contributing an estimated 2.1 billion tonnes of COemissions annually. To put that into perspective, this is equivalent to the emissions from over 456 million cars each year.

A significant contributor to this environmental crisis is the footwear industry. With over 25 billion pairs of shoes sold annually, many of them inevitably end up in landfills. These discarded sneakers take 30 to 40 years to decompose, further increasing the problem.

The sustainable sneaker revival brand studiœncore is making a change by offering repairs and transformations of old sneakers. They replace worn-out soles with high-quality Vibram soles, giving the sneakers a second life instead of letting them end up in landfills.

The Carbon Footprint of Sneakers

Sneaker production alone accounts for 1.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a staggering statistic when compared to air travel, which is responsible for 2.5% of total emissions. Even a single pair of running shoes has an environmental cost, generating approximately 13kg of CO-comparable to keeping a 100-watt light bulb on for an entire week.

A Designer's Wake Up Call - This Is studiœncore

For 20 years, Florence was part of the system- designing sneakers, attending trade shows, and traveling the world to uncover the latest trends. But in 2022, she had a light bulb moment: She realized she had to be part of the solution rather than the problem. With her extensive experience in sneaker design and her newfound skills in shoemaking and repair, she launched studiœncore.

Reinventing Sneakers for a Sustainable Future

At studiœncore, the mission is simple: revive old and worn sneakers rather than let them go to waste. Instead of discarding shoes just because the soles are damaged, studiœncore removes the old sole and replaces it with a durable welt and a brand-new Vibram sole. Every revived sneaker is unique, as the shape and color of the welt vary, allowing Florence's creativity to shine through.
