What comes to your mind when you think about upcycling? Probably some crazy DIY projects that just make you wonder who would ever wear it.

But what if I told you that upcycling can actually be cool and stylish? It's a way to give a new meaning to your preloved items and create your own unique, recognisable style.

Where do I find the inspiration?

Good question. Simply everywhere around you. Upcycling is growing in popularity at an incredible speed. On different platforms, you can find endless inspiration and creator who share their ideas with step-by-step instructions.

But to get you started, here are a few of our personal favourites who give you a first glimpse into the world of upcycling.

Couture at home

One of the first creators who introduced me to upcycling was @alborodan. We usually think of upcycling as just prolonging the life of trash, but this creator shows how basic items can become couture-inspired statement pieces. Their looks take inspiration from fashion houses like Jean Paul Gaultier, Margiela, Prada, and Raf Simons.

The best part? All of these projects use thrifted items, and the creator shows different styling options, too. Definitely worth checking out for some inspiration.

Rethink existing items

@with_lana is a go-to place if you want to add an interesting twist to your style, make it instantly recognisable. This account shares unique and fresh upcycling ideas that won't leave you indifferent. Lana rethinks basic items and shows how small, thoughtful changes can add functionality or uniqueness.

DIY Y2K

Y2K made a huge comeback in 2020 and has stayed one of the most popular aesthetics for Gen-Z. @i_thriftflip shows how to create your own Y2K-inspired pieces at home. Their videos are entertaining, occasionally funny, and they prove how existing clothes can be transformed into super trendy pieces that fit your style.

A bag from shoes?

That's the best part about upcycling: anything can become everything; the only limit is your imagination. @leylaeyvy takes it to the next level, making seriously cool bags out of shoes. Unique colours, materials and shapes, once you see it, you will start imagining how many other transformations are possible.

Upcycling and high fashion

Upcycling isn't just for DIY fans. It's making its way into high fashion and changing the whole narrative. These clothes aren't just about style, they represent sustainability and meaningful design.

Let’s talk about it.

Upcycled couture

Sounds crazy, but it exists.

Designed by Kevin Germanier, originally from Switzerland, is famous for creating couture pieces from recycled plastic bottles, metal and old fabrics. His work combines unexpected textures and colours, defining the future of sustainable fashion. His creations have been worn by icons like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Björk.

Not the most affordable designer, but definitely one to watch.

The radical upcycler

Matthew Needham is a London-based designer, works with found materials, deadstock from fashion houses, and even fly-tipped waste. His studio blends experimental craft, sustainability and fashion innovation to create concept clothing and accessories.

The meaning behind each item

Benjamin Benmoyal’s brand reimagines fashion by weaving unexpected materials like old VHS and cassette tapes into new fabrics. His work merges personal history, cultural heritage, and experimental design to create garments that feel nostalgic yet futuristic.

Transforming “ware” into wear

Tega Akinola has garnered considerable attention for her innovative upcycling genius. Her signature cable heels, the first of their kind, gained huge recognition. At just 22, she was featured by Vogue, and her designs have been worn by influencers like Emma Chamberlain. Definitely a rising star to keep on your radar.

Yes! Designers like Kevin Germanier, Matthew Needham, Benjamin Benmoyal, and Tega Akinola are redefining fashion with upcycled creations.

Do I need to knpow how to sue to upcycle?

No. A lot of upcycling projects don’t require specific skills and are beginner-friendly.
