Based in Barcelona, Footwearology is a combination of an R&D centre, prototyping facility, and educational institute that supports creators, brands, and innovators who want to rethink the way footwear is produced.
Founded by Nicoline van Enter, Footwearology brings together a network of experienced footwear professionals worldwide to organise a range of courses that train other footwear professionals on subjects like the circular economy, new technologies, innovative business models and more. The aim is to dismantle the outdated, globalised supply chains that dominate the footwear industry and introduce a local, transparent, and circular model instead.

What does footwear innovation look like?
Footwearology is transforming footwear by developing shoes with multiple lifecycles that are manufactured and sold on demand through transparent, automated, local manufacturing and distribution systems.
At their lab in Barcelona, the team explores alternative production methods such as 3D printing, 3D knitting, and laser cutting to create shoes that are not only more sustainable but also customisable and easy to dissemble or recycle. This work allows for shoes to be produced with circularity at their core, implementing a modular design that uses fewer components and assembly techniques to reduce waste and allow for easier repair.

Education as a catalyst
Education is central to Footwearology's mission. The lab runs both online and offline courses for professionals worldwide that deep-dive into topics like AI for footwear design, 3D printing, and sustainable sourcing strategies. through a hands-on learning model, participants can gain practical knowledge and are encouraged to question the traditional framework of the footwear industry.
A local-for-local future
Footwearology embodies a "local-for-local" model where shoes are designed, made, and sold within the same region. This significantly reduces the emissions caused as a result of transportation and supports local economies. By encouraging brands worldwide to embrace automated technologies, digital prototyping and on-demand production, Footwearology offers a demonstration of how the footwear industry can become more innovative, ethical, and sustainable.
