Johnny Footwear is a biodegradable sneaker that doesn’t just disappear responsibly, but leaves behind life. Specifically: an apple tree.

The concept is as imaginative as it is practical, blending classic sneaker styling with a quiet mission to fight plastic pollution and promote reforestation.

A Different Kind of Sole

Developed by Toronto-based designer Luc Houle, Johnny shoes were born out of a frustration with the environmental cost of conventional footwear. From the beginning, the goal was clear. Build a shoe that feels good, performs well, and gives back to the Earth.

Instead of the industry-standard mix of plastic polymers and synthetic foams, Johnny shoes use Fair Trade, plant-based materials. The upper is made from simple, breathable canvas. The midsole is lightweight and cushiony, yet fully biodegradable. And the outsole is crafted from natural rubber, offering grip and durability.

But what makes Johnny truly different lies beneath the surface of each sole, and that is an apple seed.

Plant Your Sneakers

Once your Johnny shoes have worn out, they don’t head to the bin. They head underground. When planted, the biodegradable materials break down over just a few years, and the embedded apple seed germinates with help from a built-in fertiliser capsule.

This process, inspired by the legend of Johnny Appleseed, creates a moment of circularity, and what once helped you walk the Earth now helps restore it.

While bizarre in concept, the impact is serious. Every pair contributes to reducing plastic waste and supporting reforestation. Even if you don’t manage to bury your shoes, they’ll still break down in landfill conditions thanks to the naturally-occurring compounds that attract microorganisms.
